Like a lot of people on this board, I suffer from migraines, like you describe. I worked with a neurologist and tried the three different classes of meds they offer and also botox but none of that helped and horrible side effects for most of the meds. Went off of gluten (dr's didn't offer this as an option first, which seems almost criminal) and it really helped the frequency. I do still have migraines at least 2 times a week but that is better than every day. I'm sure there are other diet related issues, but I haven't found something to cure them. Oh, and it took months before the gluten free diet helped the headaches but I did feel relief of joint pain within the first week.

I have migraines and have the Botox injections that have help. I also have Maxalt for the few breakthrough headaches I do have.

Many say that excedrine Migraine is helpful.

I think a Gluten free diet might help. Also eliminate any known triggers. No gluten at all. Also reduce sugar, processed foods and dairy.

For me nothing works better than Imitrex to stop the pain. 100 Ngs for REALLY bad ones and 50mgs for moderately horrible ones.

Hi there Trish00. I had suffered with headaches/migraines all my life. Back in 2007, I had disc replacement surgery on my neck. My spinal cord was also bent in almost a Z shape. After the surgery, I stopped having regular headaches. I now get headaches like a "normal" person does. I think the Z shape of the cord was not allowing the spinal fluids to flow as they are supposed to and caused a lot of my headaches. Anyway, I was not told that that would be a good side affect of the surgery, but it was a welcome one.

I also have regular bad headaches which substantially improved after going completely gluten and soy (and dairy and grain) free. After a couple of months my headaches were less severe and less frequent. I have recently started working with a naturopath to lower my estrogens levels which has also helped a lot.

I've had bad headaches since I was 9. About 4 years ago, I finally got fed up with the headache every day, so my doctor sent me to a neurologist who is a headache specialist. We tried several different things. Topomax and a beta blocker were working pretty well in conjunction, but the side effects from the Topomax (struggling to find my vocabulary!) were too much. He switched me over to a different anti-seizure med, Keppra, and I've been going strong on that combo for about 3 years. I still have occasional breakthrough headaches, which usually come in swarms with long headache-free periods between. For those times, I have kind-of an arsenal of things to try: Tylenol, a traditional codeine-based painkiller, Imitrex, and an injectible medication that's new. Seems like every headache is different, so they don't always respond to the same medication every time.

As I mentioned, I take Imitrex to stop the pain. Sometimes I take Treximet. Both excellent migraine pain meds.

I too ended up on daily Topamax. It reduces the frequency. But I only take 50 mgs. Daily. Any more than that and I also can't find my vocabulary! Even the low dosage is a bit of a problem.

I got Ocular migraines they are the nasty ones. I got sometimes two a day and they can make you hallucinate if they come rapidly.

My neurologist did 6500.00 worth of tests , brain MRI, scans , heart checks and even carotid arteries all were fine.

He put me on Verapamil 200 mgs it didn't work then doubled the dosage to 400 mgs and glad to say haven't had one in over a year now! Not sure if it works on all migraines , but ask. I've actually lowered the dosage now back to 200 mgs for the last four months still no recurrences.
