Siblings of Addicts Community Group
I created this group because I think often when there is an addict in the family the siblings of the addicts often go unnoticed. I have found numerous support groups for the parents of, the spouses of, and even the children of addicts but nothing really to specialize in the siblings of addicts department and feel it is well overdue. I hope in this group other siblings of...
Perhaps it will help to talk about it with people who understand.
I second Sinclair's suggestion of Al-anon. I have been going to Al-anon/ Adult children meetings for almost a year now and it has helped immensely, it is an amazing thing to be around and hear from people who either are or have been through the same kind of situation. I have also been seeing a gem of a counsellor for about 18 months and she has also been awesome, I would not have made anywhere near the amount of progress that I have without her.
I have also read books about Codependency, Adult Children of Alcoholics, Adult Children of dysfunctional families, and I am a member of the Codpendency group here on DS and have found all of these things have helped me a lot. My brother is still doing what he does, and pretty much so is the rest of my family, but I am feeling better about me and my life and am learning some healthier ways of coping. And stepping back from people who cause me nothing but pain, hurt and distress is one thing that I have been working really hard at. And I am also finally learning that I can't change anyone else but me. It has been a devastating realisation but it has been a huge relief as well.
I wish I had a simpler reply. All I can say is these are the things that have helped me and I hope you find something in there that helps too! Take care and best wishes to you :)
