Hello all!
I wanted to get a bit of feedback. There is so much literature that is out there about the 12 steps and the program overall and newcomers are really blanketed with pamphlets and such when they first come. However, I think it is still a very confusing thing to walk into your first SAA meeting not knowing what to expect, especially when everyone starts saying prayers and such that you don't know and following discussion rules you don't understand.... it is like going to your first Catholic wedding and not having a program to follow! :)
I am drafting a "cheat sheet" of sorts in the form of a bookmark to give to newbies as they walk in the door to our meetings. I would like to know ....
What do you wish someone would have explained to you when you walked into the door of your first meeting? What would have immediately made you feel more comfortable?
I would love your feedback!
Thank you!

I've never been to an SAA meeting but have been to group meetings for depression and other things. I think the most important thing is to smile and be welcoming. I think the biggest fear I would have would be judgment. Knowing that the people there are OK with me being there goes a long way. If someone lets me know where to sit and what, if anything, is expected of me, that helps. Maybe a brief rundown on the flow of the meeting would help, too.

Hello.....SAA is like other 12 step groups....anonymity is paramount....the format may slightly differ but the basics are there...I. everyone finds a seat, 2, there's an opening moment / prayer, 3. opening remarks on what is SLAA, sometimes, the chairperson will distribute the opening remarks among the participants to share in the reading, 4. then, depending on the size of the group, they will break up into smaller groups so that people can share or 'get current' which is focus on their recovery (not on sexual details of relapses or historical sexual relations), in fact, those with stable recovery often share their feelings, and nothing about sex, believe it or not, 5. once the meeting is done, then people regroup into one larger group to finish the meeting with a prayer. 6. Members often go for coffee to talk about recovery or process what they heard at the meeting. 7. The mature recovery group encourage to find a sponsor of the sex in the beginning of one's recovery to go through the 12 steps which is the heart of recovery. Hope this helps.

Oops...my last sentence meant to say, The mature recovery groups encourage to find a sponsor of the same sex in the beginning of one's recovery in order to go through the 12 steps, which is the heart of the recovery process. Hope this helps.
