First and foremost you are among friends here and can find a lot of support. You need to start by understanding that overcoming your issues is a lifelong journey. A lot of us are in a twelve step group. This is based on the AA recovery but the only thing different is changing the word alcohol for sex. What I like is that, while it certainly helps you progress in recovery, it is also based on improving yourself as a person affecting every aspect of your life. You learn to understand a spiritual power, face your shortcomings and be more humble, learn how to interact with others with empathy and understanding and learn how to face your problems head on.
While you struggle in your early stage of revovery, know that the longer you have sobriety the easier it becomes to limit and overcome your urges. Also understand that this is a very cunning problem and sheer willpower will not last. You need a program, counseling, a support network, and understanding that your brain has been reconditioned to short circuit and basically needs to be re-wired.
I found it both fascinating and helpful to read and understand the effect on your brain and how it literally changes in addiction. Sex addiction affects the same parts of the brain as drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, etc. They all affect dopamine levels by spiking them to abnormal levels. Dopamine is something your brain desires so abnormal levels make you act in ways you typically wouldn't.
Welcome to this group and I hope you get much out of the discussions and are successful in your recovery process.
Many sex addicts really hope and I think really try to stop on their own because the shame is so great on the inside you think if anyone really new me the wouldn't like me. If they really new what went on in my head they'd run for the hills. This can be a huge barrier to getting help. BUT if you can push yourself to go to a meeting and maybe just listen to other people just like you struggling in the same ways well than that shame would start to dissipate.
You will learn that having a counselor can help you heal as an individual because addictions are the plants the thing that you notice the behaviors but what people don't see are the roots that's what the therapist will help you identify and work on.
For example:
"Wow, I went an entire week before relapsing! remember when I couldn't even make it a day?"
Or
"I know I've been back and forth being able to go a week here and only a day there, but this is the longest I've been able to fight before giving up!"
I'm loving this website more and more every time I visit!
Thanks for the love!
I feel your pain. It has been a long time since I have looked at a pornographic video, over six months. Porn does hurt us and sexual robs us of our serenity. Today I saw hentai drawings on DeviantArt and I didn't stop to look at them for even a few seconds. I just looked past them. Although, I still think that I wasn't making progress when I allowed those pornographic drawings to appear in the search results.
Pornography doesn't make us happier it simply enlarges the voids which we already suffer from. I have been a pornography addict since I was age 11. I remember that when I was a teenager my addiction was at its worst. I have been trying to recover but I've realized that once you're a pornography viewer you can never fully recover.
Even if you just look at pornography for a second you become instantly addicted all over again. Today I felt like masturbating after seeing the erotic drawings, even for one second, but I have resisted and here I am writing to you.
I will just hope that we can recover. Thank you For sharing.
