I often wondered how far I'd be stretched to give into temptation. In October last year my wife took ill (she has recovered somewhat). I was without her for a week while she was in the hospital. This month on the tenth my father passed away while I was at his bedside. I held his hand until his last breath. During these two trials I never once considered giving in to sex/porn. I feel stronger to withstand it. I am at the point now where the mere thought of giving in makes me cringe. I have a complete aversion to porn. I have two years and six months clean. I know without a doubt that nothing can make me give into porn. I blew out my knee in November last year as well. I have not and will not let porn rule my life EVER again! It feels good to say that and know that it is true. I continue to go to my recovery meeting. Yes life is good!

That is fantastic (obviously not the events but your recovery). Congratulations. As someone 4 months clean what are your long-term recommendations?

Your post was great to read this morning. My husband is 21 months sober and he says the same thing. There have been very stressful times in those months and he says not once was he tempted, or even thought about acting out. Honestly, I sometimes struggle with that, thinking am i being fed yet another deception? For him it wasnt about staying sober it was a complete life change and he hasnt looked back.

Great work and thanks for the post. We begin to find different ways to handle stress in recovery. At one time, that's one of the things that drove our addiction but when you learn other ways to deal with stress, not only do you help your recovery but you can thrive in other ways reducing the effects of stress. This benefits your physical health as well. Stress is always going to be part of our lives but we learn to channel it in other ways. Challenges in life make us stronger as individuals, as does our recovery.

Your sobriety has served you well and clearly you know you can handle stress in other ways rather than give in to your former behavior as a coping skill.

Thanks for this. It's just as important for us to read this as it is for you to read our comments.
