Stress, boredom, frustration and fear are all triggers for me, as well as certain visual or audial stimuli. If I find myself triggered, I try to remember to do a self-assessment, and then decide how to address the situation.

I've gone without pornography for 2-1/2 years, so although I get triggered sometimes, it's a bit different -- I have more experience saying no to the triggers and am confident that I can do so -- but I still do get triggered nonetheless. For example, I used to often use porn when I was worried about either the amount of work I had to do or a particular task I was stressed about. Sometimes I will suddenly find myself aroused when I'm stressed about work. I have learned, however, that the way to address it is to get going on the work, and that the arousal will pass once I'm not stressed about that.

my husband had lots of triggers in the early stages of recovery. The typical HALT (hungry, angry, lonely, tired) so had to fill those times with healthy outlets...through his white knuckle failed sobriety for 18months he didnt deal with those triggers and was miserable to be around..after full disclosure and true recovery he used those times to play music, read, pray, reach out to other addicts, exercise etc. Now 3 years sober, he doesnt get triggered at all.

That's great to here. Ya I know my triggers and have them islolated so they don't take up more of my time but battling them is difficult. How long did it take your husband to start to over come them?

For sure a good year of solid recovery...12 step meetings ..working the steps..support ..therapy both individual and marriage....now he sees things differently..healthy mindset...women are not objects..and he makes sure he gets lots of rest..exercise..eats well..and still does his healthy activities...
