The first visit to a group is the hardest, but everyone there shares your pain and your shame and you will see you are not alone. Take that first step.
Honestly, I personally would be very distrustful of an online video chat group. I'd be worried that someone would be saving the video session and posting it on YouTube or something. People do all kinds of things online just to be mean that they'd never do in the physical presence of others, and you'd have a better shot at seeing a camera if someone actually were to try to sneak one into a group meeting.
I did quit using pornography with the help of an online forum, but I think that has its drawbacks. Physical group settings force you to spend most of your time listening to others instead of talking about yourself, and learning to get out of one's own head and just exist in the presence of others is a big step toward breaking free of addiction.
They are designed to get you out of your own head by listening to others rather than spending time alone in your own head.
Talking about yourself is fine and there is always room to share in a physical group, but by listening to others, you are in a position to learn from everyone else's experiences, be inspired by success stories and learn to shed the shame that goes with this addiction out in the open and face to face and away from a computer.
Just for the record, my husband thought for years he could do this himself with no help from anyone. Guess what??? It did work for a while and then he always relapsed worse than he was before.
Physical groups are a way to help a person make a commitment to recovery, getting a sponsor and eventually sponsoring others.
I also really like the point of engaging in the practice of listening as part of the healing process.
Jay, I do believe you could get a phone sponsor through SA or SAA. Are the 12 step meetings in your area at times that are inconvenient to you and/or your family?
