I don't know how a person would truly overcome this addiction without Christ. I was a total SA before being born again, and I've struggled with PA periodically since coming to faith (almost 14 yrs ago) and I can tell you a few things from my experience...
1. The person struggling has to WANT to change. That's step #1
2. Understand that you are likely dealing with spiritual issues as well as mental, emotional, relational. This is a tough pill for ppl to swallow in this materialistic world, but it's def a key to understanding addiction and who the battle is actually against.
3. Agree w/ a previous poster that this addiction feeds on isolation. Your loving support will likely be key to his overcoming this.
4. He likely needs to find some guys who've also struggled w/ this and overcome it. Best way to get out of a hole is to find someone else who's been there and learned to climb out.
5. Check out Celebrate Recovery. It's 12 step but from a Christian perspective.
6. Removing the opportunities for him acting out is key at this stage, but understand that it's not really addressing the "root" issue(s). That said, filters, removing access to certain tech, etc is smart at this stage.
7. Have grace for him. We all struggle w/ things. What you struggle w/ he likely doesn't, and vise versa. That said, if he doesn't want to change (and shows no signs of behavior change), he needs to know that intimacy with you will be negatively impacted.
My prayers are for you! It's a battle out there. Pls keep us posted
