Sex / Pornography Addiction Support Group
Sexual addiction, also sometimes called sexual compulsion, is a form of psychological addiction to sexual intercourse and other sexual behavior.
Hi everyone, so uh… as is to be expected from my being here, I might have a porn addiction. Now, I suspect most of you will take that ‘might’ to mean I definitely do and I’m just in denial. And, hey, maybe that’s exactly what’s going on, but one way or another, I have some questions and misgivings I’d like to voice before I fully commit to fully quitting or anything like it.
On one level, I almost certainly need to change my porn habits to some extent. I’ve heard a lot about some of the abuse and exploitation that happens in the production of a lot of porn, and it is far past time I stop supporting it in any way. And even if there is such a thing as ethical porn out there, I definitely use porn in general as a way to escape far too often.
At the same time, though, despite my having thought things along these lines for a long time now, I have been averse to anti porn communities of any sort. See, for about as long as I can remember, I’ve had some serious issues with sexual shame. I tend to feel this profound sense of guilt alongside most any sort of physical attraction, much –though certainly not all- of which I think is rooted in my conservative Christian upbringing. And, well, I guess I tend to associate anti-porn communities with that same sort of conservatism that has given me so much grief (I'm a straight, cisgender man, for context).
To put it another way, I have this intensely internalized general feeling of sex negativity, and as much as I know I need to change my habits to some degree, I find myself averse to seeking help there because I more or less expect that anyone who would try to do so would ultimately just reinforce those exact feelings.
Another, perhaps more crass concern is that I don’t entirely want to give up porn, not completely. It’s the only sexual outlet I’ve ever had, so although it’s clear that there is a lot wrong with the industry, I want to believe there are some forms of it out there that I can ethically consume. And while some of my current habits are perhaps personally harmful, maybe there’s some way I can seek to moderate them rather than cut them off completely. Because I’ve tried to cut it out completely, and I haven’t been able to. The longer I go, the more I start driving myself up the wall. Maybe that’s addiction and all the more reason to cut it out, or maybe I just have a naturally high sex drive, and trying to shut that part of me down just won’t work.
Or, maybe all that is just rationalization. Maybe there really is no such thing as ethical porn, and I just need to quit making excuses and suck it up already. I really, really don’t know.
What do you all think?
After writing all this (and likely for you reading it) the answer clearly seems to be, 'd) All of the above'. It's depressing I didn't figure this out long ago. I couldn't see that the 'enlightened', reassuring messages to stop feeling guilty about masturbation wasn't (isn't) for me.
I don't know how much of this is meaningful to you, but to my younger self (age 9 to 59) I would say, 'Micheal, try to make everything you do a new part of your Real Life, and your Whole Self. Live your best life. You can't do that while being one person in private and another person for others. It's a form of deception which is nearly always a cancer. Find help for any behaviors you feel unable to control. Yes it's true that sexuality is somewhat different-as we're aware of the drawbacks to repressing it. However, we must feel confident to express our whole self. We must be genuine-comfortable in our own skin. Live who you are, not a life of hiding. You won't like it, and neither will almost everyone around you.
I don’t know if there is any ethical type of porn, but I am coming to realize that I am a porn and sex addict. I’ve felt shame for many years and have wanted and tried to quit more times than I can tell you.
My situation isn’t the same as yours but I will share it.
My marriage is in a bad place right and don’t know if it will recover or end due to me lying repeatedly to my wife. I was hiding my use of porn and being a sex addict before meeting my wife from her. Now she doesn’t believe me when I say I haven’t cheated on her (which I have never done).
Having said all that, I am looking for help. I have reached out and started counselling with a therapist who specializes in porn and sex addiction. He has provided me with some resources to read including an app that helps track my progress at abstaining from watching pornography. So far I have made it to 9 days and intend to keep going.
The road to recovery is long and challenging but worth it.
Fear driven by shame is what kept me from sharing any of this with my wife. That shame was reinforced from being from a conservative family, also societal norms of what “normal” is. But I am hoping to work through this shame and fear to recover from this addiction.
Hang in there and come back to this site if you need support. I have been coming to it for the last couple weeks and I think it’s a wonderful resource for people looking to deal with their addictions.
It started small and slow, a little bit at a time, I kept getting deeper and deeper into it. I even got others to join in...It got so bad that normal sex did nothing for me. I would stay awake for days in search of the best smut/porn I could find. To make matters worse is I had plenty of GFs and wives. It hurts to look back and see how much my addiction destroyed my life and so many others.
So since joining SA, I have been celibate for 8 months now. of my own choice - to get free of the addiction, Some days are harder that others, but i have 40+ years of addiction to over come.
I read the bible daily, listen to positive Christian music all day, and try to be a better friend to people.
The program works because I work it, because I am worth it.
