There are some differences. Terminology, definition of abstinence, literature, meeting formats etc. My limited understanding is that there is a lot of cooperation among S-fellowships. (The fact that they are even commonly referred to as that collectively is a bit of an indication).

At our most recent SAA state conference each of the Fellowships were represented, and had meetings available. I'm sure there are members of each that are die-hard members, as well as those who frequent what is available and are very welcoming to all.

I know SAA members that strictly use the A.A. "Big Book" program of recovery, rejecting SAA's Green Book altogether.


Telephone and online meetings can also be useful to have as "regular" meetings regardless of where your location happens to be at the time.

I would say to research and have the info mapped out so you are readily prepared. All of the s groups are online...times..days..etc.

I've been to SA, SAA, RCA, and SLAA. My favorite, for me, personally is SLAA. I'm a sex, love, and relationship addict, so I find that to be more relative. It deals alot with emotions and I'm an emotional wreck so...yeah..it's my best option. My 2nd favorite would be SAA. Any that don't turn you away because of your sexual orientation is a bonus in my opinion. If an organization dictates your recovery (SA), for me that's a huge no-no in my book. I'm of the mindset that I control my recovery..so why should anyone else have that dictatorship role? But...SA has shown to be helpful for many struggling people. I've attended meetings just to find help...didn't really matter what meeting it was. I've heard an AA meeting could help a SA/PA. Just depends on one's perspective and perception. It derives from AA material, so I'm sure relevance can be found.

A bit of a heads up as you plan your approach. I too travel frequently and for me found SA to be of immense help, but I found in some cities it took a bit of pre-planning. For instance in Chicago it took some time to convince and verify my sincerity before they would provide the location of the meeting, so please plan accordingly.
