First time post. I really don't know what to say. It's destroyed my relationship with my girlfriend of 8 years, we just bought our first house together this year. I messaged a random internet stranger for nudes 8 months ago and she'd found out, I've come clean about my porn viewing habits and tried explaining how my brain works, how I've always watched it, 2-3 times a day. Whenever I'm struggling emotionally, feeling lonely, stressed or anxious porn has always been there for me whenever I needed that pick me up. I knew I first had a problem with it when I'd be upstairs and we'd have friends round and I would be masturbating due to the stress. I really have been struggling for the longest time with this and talking about it really has helped but my girlfriend doesn't understand and this may be the end of us.

It’s a very compulsive addiction that is not easy to get past. What does help is to find healthy coping mechanisms to replace the maladaptive ones like sex. While nothing will replace the intensity, try to find something you’re really interested in or another hobby and dive head first into it.

It is a good thing that you already recognize that you have a problem. Porn is hard to combat once it is entrenched and you cannot just solve it by trying will power. You need to get help and education about it is one thing that will definitely get you started. There is group that specializes on this. They have a book called “Every Man’s Battle,” by Steve Arterburn and Fred Stoker. It will help you realize behavior and patterns and the explanation on why we do certain things. Look for the book and find their website called Newlife. They also have a radio program where you can ask them directly about your situation. It is a faith based ministry but they give a lot of non religious practical advice based on research and science.

Yep, I second Glad2Help's recommendations. "Every Man's Battle" is an excellent resource. As is "The Purity Principle" by Randy Alcorn.
