For me a few things work: 1)ID and then avoid triggers; 2)if a lust hit occurs, I say the serenity prayer until it passes; 3) if I can't shake it I call someone or more than one person until I find someone to talk; 4) I'll read something from the SA literature; 5) go outside to a public place where I know I can't act out until it passes.
Knowing triggers is essential. Once you know them try not to focus too much attention to them. Try instead to remove yourself from them as much as possible. I pray when I am unable to get out of a situation that is causing my discomfort. Have a written plan to remind you of what to do when temptation strikes.
Like borntorun said it does get easier the longer you abstain.
notice it stay away from it, pray, call some one and admit it, read from recovery oriented literature, go out to a public place, watch out when you are hungry, angry, lonely or tired, Identify your triggers and have a plan to deal with them, deal with resolving anger, observe how you react to triggers as far as giving a second thought to something. Kind of like the bird that lands on your head and brushing it off.
Has anyone had any sucess with the conventional cold shower as a proactive measure cause man I dread that idea sometimes or maybe a partial one would do that is directed to the "right area" lets say.
What about exercise like a walk in the park or hike up a mountain trail in the woods because that seems to get me focused on my body and life and other capacities to have, enjoy, maintain as opposed to sex or sexual compulsion. It seems to work for me to some capacity or extent.
