Hi, I am struggling with porn addiction.

In December of 2012 I got married to whom I thought was the girl I was going to spend the rest of my life with. But after a while due to my dishonesty she found out about my addiction, and after about a year of my lying and fights I decided that I was time for a break, but after close to a 2 year separation we got divorced and it still is very hard for me at times losing the girl I loved more than I loved anything in the world but I was a really big liar and an addict. I still even though I lost everything due to my porn addiction I still struggle with it and I don't know what to do about it. I can't afford to go see anybody about it and I just want the urges to go away. The only time I don't feel any urges and I don't think about it or act on it is when I have my daughter, but recently i went from having her half the time now I only get her 2 nights a week so now I feel like I'm losing something once more it also put me being alone to think and act on urges more days of the week now. I don't know what to do. I just want to be healthy and do normal things without this always sitting in my head.

You're not alone, man, and you've done a good thing just by coming on here and sharing your story. Everybody here is here to help.

Have you explored whether there are 12-step groups in your area? They have the benefit of being cost-free and lots guys (and some women) who struggle with porn addiction have found help in groups like that. The routine of going to a group helps fill those times when you feel alone and full of urges.

I go to a place called celebration recovery. They are offered all over the country. It is a support group where u share your problems and issues and no judging or questioning just support. It's a 12 step program and a God friendly place. I also highly recommend getting in touch with God and reading scriptures praying and doing daily devotion to grtncloser to God. He can help you if you lay all your problems at the foot of the cross and let him carry the burden for you. It isn't going to be easy or quick but I have faith that you can do this.

I tried going to one around where I live (the only one) but the only problem with that is I don't have any problem with religious help but I live in a small town in Utah and the only group was threw the Mormon church, I am not LDS and I dont see things the same way they do. I don't have a problem with Mormons but I did just feel really uncomfortable when I was there and it kinda did the opposite of what help I was wanting. If there was any other group around here I would of probably stay but this one wasn't for me. I wouldn't mind reading a Bible with people but they don't really read the Bible it was more of the book of Mormon and I can't help but not really believe in that book.. I would rather stick to my Holly Bible.

Dude: Don't get me wrong, if a 12 step helps some people, great. Most all information points to the 12 step approach not working a majority of the time. It tries to control urges, not cure them. I had some craziness myself for over 15 years of marriage. You have to get in touch with what the root cause is. The more I read and hear stories like yours, the more it usually comes down to childhood trauma of some sort. I hope and wish the best for you.

We disagree that evidence points to 12-steps not working or being oriented toward controlling urges. From personal experience, while sobriety is an initial goal, the 12 steps lead toward uncovering root causes of addictive/compulsive behavior. Check out Patrick Carnes' book "A Gentle Path Through the Twelve Steps", for example.

If you can't get to a 12-step program that works for you, the big 12-step programs, including Sex Addicts Anonymous and Sexaholics Anonymous, have telephone meetings every day, multiple times per day. We have links to those fellowships on our web site, under "12-step groups".

If reading the Bible is more your speed, there are a number of online Christian groups that can help address porn use issues, such as XXXChurch. We have those listed on our site, too, under "Religious Resources".
