I am troubled by something someone confided in me about in a different online support group forum. Someone asked my advice, seeking help. He had been in an SAA group. He had a sponsor. The problem was that he didn't want to ever go back to any group, even though he knew he needed the help. He resisted for a while, but finally caved into his sponsor's wish to provide him with oral sex. He was terribly wracked with guilt over this. I really wanted to offer him some good advice, but as anyone else on here who may be a member of SAA knows, one of the Cardinal rules of an SAA group is not to look for sexual partners in the group. I told him that he needed a better sponsor, one whose particular addiction would not interfere or trigger him, and whose sobriety was longer. I further advised him to try online meetings. I am saddened that this type of thing would happen between a sponsor and the person that they mentor. If there are any other SAA members or other support groups on here reading this, have you ever heard of something similar to this happening? Would you have handled the above situation any differently than I did? I really wanted to help him, and he was glad that I was not judgmental of him, as he was left in a very bad way, addiction wise.
