Sexual addiction, also sometimes called sexual compulsion, is a form of psychological addiction to sexual intercourse and other sexual behavior.
The main problem with simply quitting an addictive behavior without a structured plan is what you've discovered which is that we eventually go back to old ways because the addictive voice has not been shut down and the brain has not been rebooted and reset.
To address the issue of loneliness, during recovery this issue is deal by accepting and loving ourselves exactly as we are at the worst possible moment, this helps in two ways:
1) If there is unconditional love and no condemnation, then we are less likely to indulge because we are not feeling bad about ourselves and we are less likely to relapse. Not to be confused with being over confident.
2) Since porn thrives on negative emotions, by being positive, porn has no foot in the door in our lives.
I can see how you would think that it was a slip albeit a small one because you did not go full on, as we say, but the fact remains that there was haste on your part, it is an indication that porn has a tight hold still.
We cannot hope to recover from porn addiction, we need to come up with a structure plan, I am repeating myself, I realize but there is a reason: I want to impart the importance of it unto you because without it, not much will change.
Intellectually, we know how destructive porn is, I know, I went through it myself, it was not until I saw a movie called Human Trafficking that it drove home hoe incredibly destructive it really is, I strongly suggest you watch it. True, that is 4 hours long but hey are worth it, if only to show just how ghastly the industry is and who really is affected beyond what we often think is affected. If that movie does not steer you clear from it, I do not know what will. After that, I no longer wanted to be complicit, watch it and you'll see what I mean by that.
Hope this helps,
Wolf (2 weeks away from 5 years sobriety)
My addiction: Primarily internet porn, but also porn of any kind. Also any interactions with people other than my wife.
My tools, in random order:
1. SAA. Go to saa-recovery.org to get the phone number for the meetings nearest you. I go every single week that I can and don't miss a week, though I've been sober now for almost 15 months.
2. Counseling. As needed.
3. Blocking software and apps. I don't allow porn on my computer or smartphone. I have someone else set the password and monitor my usage so that I am not able to look at it even if I wanted to. This helps a lot.
4. A period of abstinence. I went to yourbrainonporn.com and took on the 90 day reboot challenge. This means no porn, masturbation, orgasm for 90 days or whatever period of time you choose. The time period can be longer.
5. Calling my sponsor. I have a sponsor, like other 12 step groups, and if I am struggling, I call him or one of the other people in the group, and they talk me down.
6. Helping others. I help other addicts on here and one other forum, as well as sponsoring others. If I am helping other addicts, I am not triggered or acting out my addiction myself.
