its called risk reduction and although some people do it I don't believe that it is very effective in treating porn addiction. Using a little will almost ALWAYS lead back in to full fledge acting out. You need to have a ton of tools in your tool box to win this battle....healthy things you can turn to when you are craving, going through withdrawl. Exercise, reading, going for a walk, baking, calling a friend. Do you go to 12 step meetings? therapy?

I don't feel as though reducing the amount will help. Early on in my recovery I was taught that "one is too many, and ten is never enough." Porn is a progressive disease. It starts small and gains momentum quickly. I quit it all at once. There was no reducing it for me. I had to get rid of all of it at once. The longer you stay away from it the easier it is to say not to it. Early on withdrawal symptoms occur but they will go away in time. Be patient with the process. You can recover but it must be a total surrender of it or it will never work.

I tried quitting in many different ways and never found the "weaning" approach effective. What did work for me was learning to redirect my thoughts away from temptation. The book that offered me the most helpful guidance on that was "Breaking the Cycle: Free Yourself from Sex Addiction, Porn Obsession, and Shame" by George Collins. You can get it in print or electronic format (I opted for the latter so no one could see what I was reading) and it's available though Amazon or Barnes & Noble.

Please know that it is normal to have ups and downs when trying to break the addictive cycle. That you are finding it extra challenging at 19 days isn't unusual; it's just part of the process, and something you'll have to endure to set yourself free. I promise you it will be worth it when you succeed.

I'm really interested in the 12 step program but I don't understand how it works. If I need a support group then I don't think I can find one where I live, and I don't the people around me to find out about my addiction so I'm not seeing a psychologist. I was hoping I could try the 12 step program online. Is that possible?
