God is our Father. He does not want us to be abused. Your husband was not treating you as the Bible instructs husbands to treat their wives. "The Lord examines the righteous, but the wicked, those who love violence, he hates with a passion" Psalm 11:5. In essence, your ex-husband was already under judgment. I think leaving him was not a choice, but was a MUST. Nobody deserves to be treated that way. I divorced my husband because of emotional and mental abuse. He was also an alcoholic. I was so miserable I could not serve God the way I wanted to. My husband made it nearly impossible for me to go to church, have a job, or even have friends or family over. He cut me down in front of my kids and undermined me if I asked them to do chores.
I am a Christian. I will tell you that being a Christian is not a religion. It is a relationship with God. I advise you to read your Bible more and pray a lot. God will help you overcome your guilt and anxiety about getting a divorce. He loves you and wants to be there for you, but you need to be present with Him.
God also wants you to fulfill your potential and the plan He has for your life. I assure you He did not plan for you to be abused. I think you may have married without seeking God's wisdom and guidance first. I know that is exactly what I did. God would have never wanted me to marry the man. I thought I knew what I was doing. The devil is the great deceiver and leads many astray. You can get back on track. Seek God first in all things.
If you have a hard time reading the Bible every day, get a devotional. I have 3 of them and I am constantly amazed that the devotionals often speak directly to what I am experiencing in my life at the moment.
God Bless you,
Dandelion
