Setting boundaries with your adult children. Knowing the difference between helping and enabling.

I am new to and just started working on stopping the enabling. I am still confused at exactly what is enabling and what is not. My 27 yr old son still lives with us. He has recently been arrested for DUI for the second time, this time for drugs. He immediately got himself into a outpatient mental health hospital and has finished the daily 4 wk course. He has panic attacks and phobias and he is on Ativan and another med for mood swings/ possible bipolar. We bailed him out when he was arrested and he now has to be drug tested at least twice a week which he has been cleaning from both drugs and alcohol for the last 7 weeks. He has great part time job with UPS which he has had for 9 years, He has had other part time jobs along with UPS but keeps getting fired from them. Anyway we have not been paying for anything for him except for bailing him out and fixing his truck when it breaks so he can get to work. We just paid $350 to have his wheel barrings fixed and now his transmission has gone out. He never pays us back and we cannot afford to pay for this. He will loose his job at UPS if he doesn't have a way to get there and he has no money right now since he has been out of work for four week in treatment. He just started back this week. He has to be at work at 3:30 in the morning so me or my husband cannot give him a ride. Since we posted bail we are liable if he does not show up for his random drug test which he has to pay for. Since we both work and he does not have hardly any friends we are going to have to pay for a way for him to get to and from these drug test which will go on until Feb 2016, his next court date. Should we find a way to pay for his truck or let him lose his job, insurance, and truck? Please give me any advise you have. This so hard and I hate that this happened when he has been doing well so far.

Enabling is doing something for someone, that he can do for himself. Get Allison Bottke's book. Setting boundaries with your adult children. It is helping me. God bless u.
