I couldn't wait to share this, it was so wonderful. I had to type this while it's still fresh in my memory.
I had a patient until today who was recovering from the suicide of her brother, as well as from an eating disorder and insecurity. She said today (her final day):
-------
I feel like I finally have a role model for what a good man is supposed to be. I finally know what someone is supposed to be like when he's a father or a brother. It really makes me think more about how far I've come, because I don't doubt myself anymore. When you complimented me, I felt like you were just lying or saying something phony to be nice, but now I know it's like I had a devil and an angel on my shoulders, and all my life my devil has been telling me "you're too fat, you're not cool, you're not loved." It was hard to let the angel say "maybe he means it. Maybe you really ARE cool." And that means a lot, because you are probably the coolest person I have ever met. I know that without each of you here in this group, I could not have made it. I did NOT want to go to group therapy at first; I thought "hell no! I'm not going to sit in a group and talk about my story!" But now I know it's saved my life. I am so proud of myself.
-------
I hope I'm remembering that correctly, but most of my former patients'll tell you I have a near-photographic memory for remembering their statements very accurately.

What a rewarding moment for you. I'm guessing it's comments like that and patients like her, that get you through the bad days.

And you didn't share this with me on Friday while I was at your office? Why? :) I told you that you ROCK!!!

'Cause when you're with me, I'm there for YOU, not for you to listen to me talk about ME. I appreciated that you asked to meet with me for some advice and conversation, and wanted you to use our time for your needs. :)
