There is something about being out in nature. I tend to forget how much it feeds some part of my soul, how much it soothes me. Recently I've made an effort to be outside more. I've even done some of my reading and journaling in my backyard...feeling the breeze and the sun on my skin has been so comforting.
My anxiety was so bad the other night, the only thing that calmed me down was imagery. I had to take virtual walk through the woods!!!! Oh, how I love the color green in nature :)
The only reason I can use anything out of my herb garden is because it's just about a safe enough distance away from the main road - and having a *very* mature screen of ivy along the back wall probably also helps remove some air pollution. Honeybee crisis? What crisis? They all seem to make regular visits to my plants :)
The thing to remember is, even if you can't get out into the countryside nature is still there doing its own thing - start by observing what "weeds" come up in your immediate area, and also see how quickly nature will take over a piece of neglected waste ground, what plants turn up there. Also look for nearby canals, railway embankments and similar - you might be amazed by what you see there.
And as far as your own house/flat goes, well even if all you have room for is a climber in a pot growing up against a wall, you can still notice what kind of insects that attracts.
If you want some inspiration, try searching some of the permaculture videos on youtube - some of these people seem to have quite large suburban gardens but it's still fascinating to see how efficiently they've used every available bit of space.
Because heaven forbid we should ever be content with what we've got, that would cause the zombie apocalypse or something ...................................... ;)
The trouble for a lot of people is, the poorer you are the harder it is to break free of the cycle that capitalism traps you in - remember the old story that says over a lifetime the rich man will spend far less on shoes than the poor man?
The slightly ironic thing for me is, since I've been stuck without a car it makes it much harder for me to escape out of the city to my favourite 'sanity spots'.
Which is why I'm all about planting as much greenery as possible in the city right now ......................... if Mohammed won't come to the mountain and all that :)
I find solace when I walk along the beach. I feel more connected, to the world and more importantly to myself. I feel more grounded, I think more clearly.
I am a different person when I am out in nature. I am more curious, I am more introspective, I take time to notice the little things, the smells, the sounds, and I appreciate them. I find that I take the time to explore "me" and my feelings, my emotions, and I appreciate them as well. Problems are easier to solve when I hear the birds, and feel the sun on my face. I often find that I am more "gentle" with myself, I am not quick to chastise myself for something which I may not have even been able to change.
When the ocean waves come to the shore, they bring sand, seaweed, stones, water, maybe a crab or two, and maybe some debris from far away. Some of what the water brings is left behind for us to notice, and appreciate, and some of the things are swept back into the ocean, perhaps to return to the shoreline another day. For me, healing is similar to this process. I have many emotions and feelings swirling around in my brain, some settle out and are waiting to be noticed like the stone on the shore. Others are swept back into the swirling waters of my mind, only to be brought up again at another time.
I'm in Indiana (theres more than corn in Indiana..really) but close to lake Michigan, so I like to go there as well and sit and ponder, there is nothing like the ocean, the power of it, oh the power :)
I went for a run yesterday in a park. I was having a really stressful days; a million little things had gone wrong. As soon as I stepped onto the path and was surrounded by these old, tall, beautiful, majestic trees, I could almost feel my blood pressure drop. I also had a hard time transferring; my old school had lots of nature; the new one has a lot of concrete. It took a while to get used to.
I love nature.
