For those interested, Ms. Magazine is doing a piece on Survivors whose cases were not handled well by law enforcement. This is NOT an anti-Law Enforcement piece, but rather a piece on how misclassification of rape impacts Survivors' cases and nationwide statistics. (The agenda is to challenge how the FBI's poor definition of rape impairs local law enforcement from being *able* to respond more effectively)

The author has a good track record of writing classy, accurate stories on Survivor/Victim issues. Here is the description:

I'm working on a feature for the next issue of Ms. on the chronic failure by local police departments to report/classify rape accurately, and the horrific FBI definition of "forcible rape" that affects the way rapes are reported, tallied and classified at the local and national levels.

A survivor's voice, especially one whose rape was not counted by police, would add significantly to our understanding of the ostensible "decline" in rapes over the last few years. I'm really interested in finding the fractures in the police reporting process-how police systematically misclassify rapes and how the FBI's ancient and horrific definition of "forcible rape" ("The carnal knowledge of a woman forcibly and against her will") contributes to massively inaccurate national statistics, and harms survivors. We are putting pressure on the FBI, with this article, to change that definition to reflect a modern understanding of rape and instruct local law enforcement agencies to adapt their sex crime investigation techniques accordingly.

I'm trying to locate a rape survivor who either wants to remain anonymous but is willing to speak to me by phone or even by email (emailing with me directly or through an advocate as a middle person to protect the survivor's confidentiality) or someone who has been public about their experience (or wants to be) and is comfortable being named in the magazine.

I am looking to speak to someone who had her case dismissed/misclassified or unfounded by local police, or who could at least speak to the experience of reporting to police. If you know of anyone who might be able to speak to me I would appreciate it hugely.
