I'm about to begin the memorial service with a flute song in a few minutes. I ducked into a private room just to say that I saw that many of you had sent flowers in her honor. I am so moved and happy! It means SO much that you all have stood so close to me and counted me in your community--I am honored beyond words.

When I met your mother, I thought how proud she must be of her son - the man I had grown to know. As a mother of an adult son, it is easy for us to love our children, but not always easy to be proud of them. But, when I introduced myself to your mom, it shone - in her eyes. Her belief in you and the wonderful things you contribute to the lives of those you surround yourself with - it simply shone upon her face.

If I could have stood at my father's funeral and had a sense that I had made him proud, that he had loved me beyond words...it would have made all the difference. You can do that. As a mother who loves her son, I can tell you, nothing can make a mother happier than knowing her children are okay...not perfect...not rich or famous even...but in every sense 'okay'. She went to her Creator knowing her children are okay. She is surely resting in utter peace.

Matt,
You have been so blessed with wonderful memories of growing up with a strong, loving, supportive mother. As the days pass, may those memories sustain you during those sad moments you will experience as you try to re-establish your day to day routines.

I am envisioning your mother gathering up all your notes like flowers in a field and holding them close to her heart.

I hope the memorial service was everything you hoped for.
