Tonight I happened to be listening to one of my favorite podcasts. It's primarily a consumer electronics oriented show but they talk about current events and random other things. I was listening it to chill our and relax to try to sleep, well because of something that was said it got me stressed instead so I decided to come here and write in the hopes of getting the perspective of others.
As I listened today's episode they came to a segment where they discussed companies that basically weren't doing right by their customers and expressed frustration at one company in particular that seemed to charge a bunch of fees and they felt it was wrong to charge all those fees. One of the co-hosts asked if the main host had ever had a problem with this particular company and he said no he's never had a problem but "They practice the tradition of rape, no matter what you do your forced to pay the price of these convenience fees"
I had to rewind the podcast a bit to make sure I heard correctly and after three times, I realize I did hear what I thought I heard.
I decided before I wrote the host an email voicing my concerns about his use of the word in that way, I would look up the definitions available through the dictionary and decide if I was just being too sensitive and the word was being properly used.
So I go to Merriam-Webster online and the first definition is an herb in the mustard family so that didn't really fit the use of his sentence. He used rape as a noun so it couldn't fit with the definitions for the transitive verb so this leaves the next noun group

--- some could argue that felt he was being forced to pay these fees and had no choice since he wanted his purchase but I don't thinking consciously choosing to buy tickets through a company and getting a convenience fee attached that you know you are paying up front based on the method of product delivery is being done by force.

The last noun definition had to do with a grape pomace so I know that doesn't count either.
After all that thinking, maybe his use of the word wasn't the best choice in conveying his frustration by the way this company does things and my being upset by his use of the term maybe wasn't entirely my being oversensitive.

But be aware that in most places on the internet if you were to object you'd be the target of all sorts of hostile rebuke about needing to get a life, have a sense of humor, or stop being another one of those man-bashing feminazis or whatever. Denying the correct condemnation of misogyny is one of the tactics of patriarchal privilege, which is why people like you or me who DO object will also have to endure a backlash for it.
