The capacity for stupid behavior knows no bounds

So, my H and I had a somewhat tough week. That huge trigger last Sunday, the recovery from that. It had repercussions for my H as well...guilt flare up, angst about being able to perform. (no problems BTW)
So, we talked a little bit, and calmed each other down. Move on, let the bad days go etc.
Yesterday, he came home and we were eating dinner. He was talking about his day at work...lots going on. I have to mention for clarity, he just got new glasses, and he's been coloring his goatee. He's a red head, virtually NO gray on his head, but his facial hair is almost completely gray. So we bought some "Just for Men" in the lightest shade they have (recommended by my hair dresser) and tried it. He only leaves it on a couple of minutes and there are still gray hairs, so it looks very natural. No one at work has said anything to him, and no one noticed his new glasses.
So, he is in the back where the shipping department is. It's a woman who runs that department...I've met her many times. She's a gas, plain and simple. Funny as hell. Not married. I think she is a bit older than my H. So, he decides to ask her if she notices anything different. Nope, so he says, well, I got new glasses. And, can you tell I've been coloring my goatee? She's surprised, says no, it doesn't look fake etc.
Now, he's telling me this as we're eating. I could have just smashed my plate right into his face. Talking, together, no one else around, "friendship". Pissed me off big time, and I called him on it. Left the room, cooled off, came back downstairs and asked him if he could possibly be any more stupid?? Didn't he remember what led to the affair in the first place? A FRIENDSHIP! WTF!!!!!!!!!
He went upstairs and was just mortified. I followed him after I cooled off again and we talked. He said, "I've never thought of her that way". Well, I told him, "What if she thought THAT way about YOU?" Hmm, he'd never thought of that.
I asked him if he had any clue how attractive he could be to a woman. He was honestly surprised. So I explained to him, he's good looking, takes good care of himself, well dressed, kind, hard worker, generous etc. He doesn't see himself that way. He apologized profusely for being so stupid, for not one time thinking that his actions were over the line. For not thinking that he could lead another woman on in any way.
I've not seem him look so dismayed in a long time. He was really amazed that he could be so stupid and not have a clue or any idea until I brought it up.
No matter how much progress you make, there is still so much potential for stupidity.
So, we're ok. I don't for one minute consider this woman to be a threat in any way. I thought I would share the story to remind you all that we are only human, and can be completely blind to dangerous behavior.

Loving, I'm glad things worked out for you with this situation :)
My husband is pretty much the same, when you call them on what they did or just said...Their like, uhhh????
You can't fix stupid!!! No matter what.
We just learn to work with it.
The other lady sits in the cubicle right beside his. They literally work side by side, but are also surrounding by other employees.
But because of what he did, it is no longer acceptable. I think that is sad on so many levels.
He always had female friends before and i didnt care. He has lost that privlege forever.
Actually had me convinced for a while that i was crazy for accusing him with her of all people... well, guess im smarter than the average bear.
Having a bad day today - he is away for the weekend and i know where he is and what he's doing and there is no possible way for nonsense to occur. not concerned he is being bad, but i cant stand to be alone and dwell in my own head. thats when things go bad and i get angrier and more upset. he could not be better, but it still happened and wont go away... when he is here and validating me it is better.
My H never talked about me or our marriage even when there was some chaos here that summer. What he did do was let her cry to him about her problems and this established a pattern of sorts since her life was FULL of problems... always.
H soooo knows what boundaries were crossed and is uber careful not to go there. I think it's sad too because my H is really a nice guy and people like him but now, he won't give a female parent or coworker the chance to have these kinds of conversations.
Do you think it's something warped in their ego that makes them have to get strokes from outide... or that they have to pump themselves up helping other people when their own wife/family needs something, too?
For all of those A's that start out with friendship- they usually start with the exchange of too much personal information. If the glasses/beard conversation was had in a group of 6, or at the lunch table, it wouldn't have struck such a nerve. But I do understand how that exchange would make you uncomfortable, even if you know in your heart that there were no bad intentions.
I agree with everyone's posts, and know firsthand those feelings of fear/jealousy/confusion when your husband slips outside of your comfort zone. I think we need to communicate these feelings, especially before they grow and fester, because these guys probably don't realize they could be unwittingly setting themselves up for an uncomfortable situation.
Sounds like a common theme here- he listens to her problems, has a need to fix things to pump up his own ego, or that he is looking for an ego boost and needs to share something about himself for the compliment.
I guess the important thing is you're here because you're working to rebuild, and this is just one of the hurdles along the way. I wish you happiness and hopefully, these little bumps will be fewer and far between as you rebuild trust.
