Sensitivity to sounds

hi.  I am wondering if this symptom is related to PTSD.  It started while living with my abusive ex-husband.  I also became very sensitive to proximity.  I cannot stand in lines or tolerate people being behind me.  I get so startled I can throw my back out, and it almost feels like being assaulted to have people suddenly get too close. 


Anyway, I feel sounds in my body and it's very painful.  It's disabling.  Loud thumping can feel like the concussion of a bomb.  Little sudden noises my kids make, like putting a pen down on a desk, can feel like being tapped on from the inside and it's so startling it makes me jump and triggers a fight or flight response.  I have to wear earplugs to sleep because little cracking noises in the roof make me jump and wake me up. 


Does anyone else here get this?

I can understand why you are jumpy. You suffered a lot of trauma. I dont know if you have anyone you talk to, The best thing for PTSD is counseling. Music at night helps my husband sleep.

No. No one can understand my perspective. My reactions to things that other people can't perceive just puts them off and they abdicate or treat me disrespectfully. I have lost interest in talking to people because my life is so different from others'. This problem is not psychological and talking to someone is not going to help. It's neurological. I am not sure if it's a result of PTSD or an underlying neurological condition I have. I was just wondering if anyone else experienced this with sound. Somehow it seems like I"m the only one, and even my doctors don't understand and they expect me to somehow do better, When I am basically in pain and retreating from pain.

Thank you for commiserating though. My ex was only a piece of what has traumatized me. It seems like no matter what I do, life keeps dumping on me.

I am very sensitive to sounds and i am severely deaf. I used to wear hearing aids but the noise gave me headaches , made me jumpy , get stressed out so i stopped wearing them. I would rather not hear the sounds around me then be so super sensitive to all the little sounds around me. I love in isolation ad much as possible

hi, thank you for writing. I am interested in your situation. do you think it is just that the sound is distorted with the hearing aids? it seems strange that you could go from deaf to basically the opposite with the hearing aids. do you feel the sound in your body? like sound is a vibration, I feel that in my body even if the sound is too low to hear. do you feel that even with your hearing aids out? I have thought it might be nice to go deaf, but then all I would hear is the ringing in my ears, which would be very disturbing. this is why I can't wear earplugs as much as I used to, because the ringing is getting louder. do you get ringing?
