So after I quit the awful restaurant job, I landed an easy day shift position managing a liquor store. In the same town. I guess it's just an old town in a wet low lying area and it attracts spirit activity.
On my first day I was training. We were out front at the cash register most of the time. The lady training me told me there was a ghost and he liked to play pranks. This lady seemed a little high strung and goofy, so I of course didn't believe her. I thought here we go again, this place better not be haunted.
Later in the day the lady asked me to go get something out of the back, which I hadn't been in yet. As soon as I went back there and turned the light on, a man stepped out of the wall. He was about 3 feet off the ground and his legs from mid calf down weren't visible. He paused and looked at me and smiled. He said "oh hi there, my name's Danny Stevens and I've been here for...(he looked confused and troubled)...years. Well anyway Im real glad to have ya!" Then it looked like he got sucked up into the wall. I got what I was supposed to from the back and went out to my trainer. I must've looked startled because she asked if I was ok.
I told her "that's where the ghost lives," and pointed to the backĀ she was like "omg did you see him?!" I told her yes and that he spoke to me. She asked if he was in the corner where the wine was kept. That is where I saw him!
As the months went on, I was there nearly every day by myself with few customers (they mostly came at night). Every morning when I opened up the back I would say "good morning, Danny." And I usually didn't see him. Then one day I was really bummed out. I didn't want to be at work. I half ass said good morning and didn't even look around for him. I opened the door to the cooler to begin stocking cold beer, when suddenly I got sprayed in the face with a bottle of bud ice that was on the shelf. I swear I hadn't touched it. After it sprayed me and I screamed I heard a man laughing. Then I saw the bottle lift up out of the 6 pack, fall to the floor, and break at my feet. The lady who trained me had warned me he liked to play pranks. I got mad and told him I was never telling him good morning again! I stalked to the bathroom to wash my face, then told Danny off for making me have to smell like alcohol all day. I then felt a presence in the bathroom with me, a warmth and calmness surrounded me and I heard Danny's voice in my head. He said "I was just trying to make you smile, you looked sad."
I then started to wonder if Danny knew he was dead, if he chose to hang around the liquor store, or if he was confused and trapped there for some reason. So I ask him if he knew he was a ghost, and commented that it just figured the only person who cared enough to worry about my happiness was a dead person.
I don't know if Danny left after that or what, but I never saw him again or felt an odd presence.
The story doesn't end there. I worked at that store about a year. I got chatty with an older woman customer, and eventually learned she used to work at my store doing my job. One day she asked if anything...odd ever happened. I said oh you mean the ghost?
Sure enough she had seen Danny too, but like most other people who worked there she ignored him. She told me all the countless pranks he pulled on her.
Then she told me at her new job she bartended at one of the local lodges. A man in his 90s was there one day talking about how the liquor store used to be an old feed store and that a man died in the backroom.
This woman wondered if it could be our ghost. "If I knew his name I could look at the old film records at the library for newspaper articles." I told her his name was Danny Stevens. A few days later she got back to me and yes back in, I think the 30s, a man had sank into the feed silo and suffocated. It didn't tell his name but the article did mention a Stevens.
