Located in Downers Grove, IL (about 20-30 minutes outside Chicago)...before I moved down south to be with my fiancé, Goid Sam was hands down my favorite psych ward to visit. The food was excellent, the staff was attentive and professional, and they only hire MHCs with mental illnesses themselves. It helps to build staff/patient trust, knowing that they've already sat where you're sitting. If you're brought by ambulance, you only have the clothes on your back (which may be confiscated for a variety of reasons, such as having drawstrings)...if you go voluntarily, you can pack ahead of time...they like you to have no more than 3 sets of clothes there with you. Washing machines/dryers are available between groups for patients to do laundry. The average stay is 7-10 days. But don't let the coffeemaker in the day room fool you...it's full of DECAF!
