Hi Amber. This needs urgent medical advice. Ring your doctor or out of hours service or NHS direct. Hope you feel better soon. The urgent advice relates to the steriod but ask also about the rest. You could try ringing the hospital where you are being treated and ask to speak to the doctor on call for Rheumatology this weekend. There is always someone on call. Let us know how it goes. If all else fails go direct to Accident and Emergency at your nearest hospital. Autumm

Thanks Autumn for your prompt reply - I really appreciate it. I have now rung my local pharmacist who said I can leave it a few hours before taking the steroid and Plaquenil as long as I have a bit of toast or biscuit. I feel a bit better now - taking it very slowly - unbelievable how you can topple so quickly!

Hi Amberhere, Sorry to hear of your discomfort. If your stomach feels fine later and your wondering why the diarrhea attacks, then it might be a fatty liver to consider.

Vomit attacks or sudden diarrhea attacks over a couple hours can be a fatty liver symptom. Fatty liver can be a result of your disease progress or caused by the medication. A gastroenterologist is a good doctor to see for fatty liver. My rheumy had to adjust my meds for my fatty liver. I now take 750mg of Cellcept instead of 1500mg. I have experienced vomiting over a five hour period one weekend. The next weekend, I had several hours of diarrhea attack. I have an autoantibody that attacks kidneys and liver from my Scleroderma overlap with DM. My fatty liver is a result of my disease processes.

Do check your blood pressure. Also run a blood sugar to make sure your not dropping low. Liver and/or kidney issues will mess with blood pressure and blood sugars too.

My vomit attacks are bothersome because my stomach actually feels fine and I can tell it was not caused by something that I ate. In other words, the food was fresh from earlier in the day.

I hope you will find what triggered your surprise sick results. Do check liver and gallbladder.

Hi trpt1, thanks for your comments - I am pleased to say now on the road to recovery - I think it was a bug I picked up the other day. Funny, can eat a little now and then which is great, but as soon as I drink water it starts to feel a bit yucky again. Probably a few more days and I will be back to "normal".

Every time I get diarrhea & vomiting, I take Imodium multi-symptom. Takes away the tummy cramps in about 45 min, stops the diarrhea in about 2 hours.

For the vomiting, I eat a few bites of dry toast and ice water after I've stopped vomiting. When I'm able to hold that down, (about 2 hrs) I try a few bites of water-made instant mash potato. If I can hold down the potatoes, (another 2 hrs) I next eat Campbell's chicken noodle soup with crackers and diet ginger ale.

I take my meds, as soon as I can hold down the toast.

As to what causes the stomach trouble...do seek medical advice, as Autumm posted. Depending on your meds & illness, next time it happens you may need to go directly to the A & E before trying anything else.
