Polymyositis & Dermatomyositis Support Group
Polymyositis (PM) is a type of chronic inflammation of the muscles (inflammatory myopathy) related to dermatomyositis and inclusion body myositis. The inflammation is predominantly of the endomysium in polymyositis, whereas dermatomyositis is characterized by primarily perimysial inflammation.
It is very common with DM/PM to change DMARDs over time too. I started on MTX. I did well for three years on MTX. At the beginning of this year, I had a bad reaction to MTX with the new development of my liver & kidney diseases. I now take Cellcept which is working well.
Some people are able to get off of Prednisone completely. Other people like myself have active DM and can not totally get off the steroid. There are also many people (under age 45 usually) that go into total remission and stop all meds for several years too.
Here is good news - I have DM with fatty liver, kidney disease and pulmonary hypertension. My enlarged right side of the heart is back to normal size. My liver scores are normal at this time not elevated. My kidneys are in a normal range at this point too. I have seen my scores go way up and then come back down. My secret....The Lord! I totally think bible study and prayer help. I also have an excellent diet too. Look to all the resources you can that will help.
I hope this helps.
