High doses of prednisone will have some side effects that go away after tapering down. The doctor will determine when you should taper. I agree with Autumn that twitching and numbness has been experienced by many people at the beginning of DM.
You ask a good question about the weakness and whether it will go away. This disease is different for each person. The important thing is to work with your doctor. Write down your questions for each appointment. Get your meds at a dosage where you are seeing some improvements and then start your taper when the doctor decides it is time to taper.
My personal goals with DM is to feel well on a daily basis. My doctor and I work together. We look at my blood work and adjust medications up or down as needed. I do get weird and scary pains from time to time, but I have a Trust in The Lord which helps.
I hope this helps. Best wishes.
