Polymyositis & Dermatomyositis Support Group
Polymyositis (PM) is a type of chronic inflammation of the muscles (inflammatory myopathy) related to dermatomyositis and inclusion body myositis. The inflammation is predominantly of the endomysium in polymyositis, whereas dermatomyositis is characterized by primarily perimysial inflammation.
I don't say that to discourage you but to offer that it is very unlikely you will be successful in going from 5 mg to off. Autumn is right that most people with Myositis find they need to maintain a low dose of Prednisone ongoing.
Interesting enough, after my visit to Johns Hopkins last month, I am off MTX too. I'm waiting to see how that goes. It has been a month and I do have more aches and pains and I feel like I have a reduction in stamina but I'm not sure if it is related or not.
Work closely with your doctor on your taper schedule and follow their advice. Going too fast could put you right back on a higher dose. My first taper was too fast and I had to go back up to 60 mg and start the taper over. I can't tell you how disappointing that was to me.
I look at it this way.. I can count my blessings if I only need to take lower dosages of any medication at this time. I know things could change at any time.
I have all the symptoms that you mention with the stabbing pains and puffiness. I especially do not like the icepick headaches that have a few moments of stabbing in the brain - no fun! I do think it is liver/kidney related issues for me. I recently went up to 6mg of Prednisone and I have some relief from the stabbing pains & puff.
I know that you will consider how you feel and your doctor's advice related to tapering. I wish you well on your choices.
