Polymyositis & Dermatomyositis Support Group
Polymyositis (PM) is a type of chronic inflammation of the muscles (inflammatory myopathy) related to dermatomyositis and inclusion body myositis. The inflammation is predominantly of the endomysium in polymyositis, whereas dermatomyositis is characterized by primarily perimysial inflammation.
I have not had a cancer at this point. There are some here who will be able to give some good information on the subject of cancer. I think routine blood work is the first place where the doctor would know that something needs a further check. DM skin issues that get advanced can be a sign of something internal. I do not believe in getting all worried about cancer. Just watch blood work, skin, and how you feel.
I have found my big concern is to keep liver, kidneys and lungs healthy. A good diet, exercise, take meds & watch blood work to keep it looking good is important. Trying to avoid moving into type 2 diabetes (healthy liver) is my current goal.
Do not get worried. Keep routine appointments and let the doctor know how you are feeling. Do run tests or procedures when the doctor feels it is in order. Best Wishes.
I am not sure a 'routine" CT Scan is a great idea. Not all cancers show up on a CT Scan (some need a PET Scan). Often cancer presents symptoms that lead to additional tests including scans. I do think it is worth doing the routine stuff we are supposed to do....mammogram...colonoscopy...etc. I would discuss your concerns with your doctor. If they feel a CT Scan is a good idea, consider moving ahead. Personally, I avoid radiation exposure as much as possible.
