Polymyositis & Dermatomyositis Support Group
Polymyositis (PM) is a type of chronic inflammation of the muscles (inflammatory myopathy) related to dermatomyositis and inclusion body myositis. The inflammation is predominantly of the endomysium in polymyositis, whereas dermatomyositis is characterized by primarily perimysial inflammation.
Also, you shouldn't expect prednisone to stop the weakness. Your muscles have been or are under assault. It's going to take some time for them to recover. Plus, muscle fibers have died. They are not going to come back. You need to work on hypertrophing the other muscle fibers around the dead ones (i.e. exercise/weight training of somekind).
I do not think a 2 week trial is long enough and I don't think you were on enough prednsione. If this is truly a myositis you are going to be on prednisone for a lot longer then 2 weeks. 1st time around for me, I was on it for 5 years and this time around it's been 1 1/2 years SO FAR....it is NOT a quick process.
Don't stay discouraged! Talk to your doc, talk to another doc, talk to anyone who may know something. I know how you feel! At some point in time we have all been where you are right now, and I know how much it can hurt staying up all night because you are in pain and are also worrying. Just remember there is this wonderful support group right here for you, and use it.
Head up! There will be days that are better.
