Hi Sara. Good to have news of you. I think this is a question that must be answered by your doctors. Only they know what auto antibodies you have with your DM and one of these antibodies caries a higher risk with the Sun. It will depend too on if you are still taking any Meds. My Rheumatologist tells me that remission is when I am off all my Meds and remain well. I know some Rheumatologists say remission is when you are well but still taking Meds so I just go with what my own doctors tell me. I take Imuran and that causes problems in the sun so I have got used to using good fake tan or going to the salon for an all over fake tan before my holidays so I am not the palest person there. I think Sara for you it needs advice from your doctor, it would be just so upsetting to cause a flare of your DM for the sake of a tan. Best wishes. Autumm

Hi Sara, DM skin has a potential risk for infection. It is important to follow the doctor's advice. I use reasonable precautions like SPF50 sun protection. I wear a hat, long sleeves, and long pants to mow the yard. It may seem ridiculous to you at this point, but it will save you from taking a powerful medication later. Remission or no remission, be careful with sunlight.

I do not get concerned with going into remission. I am just thrilled if I feel well. I will never get off Prednisone and a DMARD. I focus on good disease control and trying to feel well on a daily basis.
