Polymyositis (PM) is a type of chronic inflammation of the muscles (inflammatory myopathy) related to dermatomyositis and inclusion body myositis. The inflammation is predominantly of the endomysium in polymyositis, whereas dermatomyositis is characterized by primarily perimysial inflammation.

New Gene research

It has been announced by Government here today that the UK is to invest 300 million pounds sterling into Gene research on cancer and rare diseases. This is a four year study with the aim of finding out 'why' we get these diseases and hopefully to find new ways to cure them. I do hope it will give hope to all of us with Myositis. It is apparently the biggest research being undertaken in this field in the world today. I wish the scientists all the very best and pray they come up with some new answers. I wish I understood any of it, I don't , I only know its a good thing. If there are any scientists out there on this forum please let us know what you think about this big research push. Autumm

That is very exciting Autumn! As a cancer patient, I have been following cancer research for over 10 years. It is amazing how far we've come in knowledge. I know there is quite a bit of gene research being done for many diseases and trying to figure out how to alter a gene before it kicks off serious diseases. I know Myositis is a "side cart" disease that doesn't get as much attention as other diseases but I am glad there are doctors/scientists/associations (like the TMA) looking out for us and trying to make medical advancements to help us.

Please keep us posted what you might hear. I think it is very exciting!

Hi Lexis. Its great news. It is all over the TV, Radio and press here, it's going to involve 40,000 patients across the country with cancer and rare diseases. We live in interesting times!!! Best wishes Autumm

Hi Autumn, I am glad that the UK is moving forward with research and I am sure that we will all benefit from new discoveries and new meds.

I think it would be nice if anyone could figure out how to cure/kill viruses.

UTMB in Galveston, Texas has come up with a vaccine for the Ebola Virus. The vaccine is still in testing stages and is not ready to be used on humans. I am thinking the next step for getting closer to eliminating viruses is finding the vaccines. So many good advances are popping up.
