Polymyositis & Dermatomyositis Support Group
Polymyositis (PM) is a type of chronic inflammation of the muscles (inflammatory myopathy) related to dermatomyositis and inclusion body myositis. The inflammation is predominantly of the endomysium in polymyositis, whereas dermatomyositis is characterized by primarily perimysial inflammation.
Prednisone will stop or slow down the rampant attack your immune system is having on your muscles but it will not give you strength. You will need to rebuilt that yourself with exercise. But we must exercise carefully and different than you might have before you got sick. I highly recommend working with a Physical Therapist who specializes in muscle disease or stroke victims. "No pain, no gain" philosophy doesn't work with Myositis patients.
Your doctor is still running a lot of tests to determine DM, PM or IBM. I know that this is a difficult time too. Do your best to try and not get frustrated. This disease requires great patience and improvements are slow. I have learned to not get frustrated and I am so much better at problem solving too. You will learn so many valuable lessons too. Do not be afraid to ask others for assistance with anything that you need too.
Be sure to visit The Myositis Association at www.myositis.org I think you will find the TMA to be a valuable resource too.
Keep us posted.
Thanks again everyone and I hope everyone had a good day

Dry eyes might be Sjogren's syndrome or just regular DM/PM dry eyes. I have dry eyes, nose, mouth, and down there. Mucous membranes can dry up considerably with DM/PM. I take an OTC eye drop of natural tears which helps as needed. I also use Biotene mouth wash which helps with dry mouth. Definitely discuss the dry body parts with the eye doctor and rheumy.
Your doctor is checking for DM or PM. While it is actually possible to have both DM and PM, it is not a typical situation.
Your doctor is still running tests. I hope the Prednisone will kick-in and some muscle strength will return.
I hope this helps. Keep us posted.
Very important to have our eyes checked!
