Polymyositis & Dermatomyositis Support Group

Polymyositis (PM) is a type of chronic inflammation of the muscles (inflammatory myopathy) related to dermatomyositis and inclusion body myositis. The inflammation is predominantly of the endomysium in polymyositis, whereas dermatomyositis is characterized by primarily perimysial inflammation.

My sister came by this evening with the December 2012 of Ladies Home Journal and said "There is an article in here and i think it is about your disease" and sure enough it was. I was surprised she even knew what i had. The article is about a 30 year old woman who knew something was wrong, just didn't know what, went on the internet and thought by the research she had done that she had Polymyositis. And sure enough, she did. It is a short article but it gives brief facts on what polymyositis is, what the symptoms are, what the treatment is, and the website for the Myositis Association. Nice to know that the information is getting out there in a "main stream" way.

I also got a nod from my aunt about the article. I quickly purchased the magazine and read it. While it didn't give tons of information, it raises awareness and THAT is exactly what we need. Well played TMA!!

I think the people who need the awareness are the doctors. I do think that myositis members will grow exponentially in the next couple of years. I remember when celiac was considered "rare" twenty five years ago, and now gluten free is everywhere. I do believe our autoimmune disease is common today. I hope researchers will get to the bottom of what causes intial flares. I am glad that research can now tell us the difference between who (types of antibodies) gets the cancers, and who gets the heart attacks. I do feel some reassurance that I can personally look for the whopping heart attack. (HA!)

I also hope that better meds without the horrific side effects will be developed to personally address the specific antibodies in each individual. I do think there is some relationships between all autoimmune diseases, and I hope medical science will figure these things out. Thank you for the helpful post. This is good information to share.
