Polymyositis (PM) is a type of chronic inflammation of the muscles (inflammatory myopathy) related to dermatomyositis and inclusion body myositis. The inflammation is predominantly of the endomysium in polymyositis, whereas dermatomyositis is characterized by primarily perimysial inflammation.

Grottons Papules

So, I have read about Grottons papules, and didnt' think that I Had any.. but then this week, I am having quite a flare.. My joints are killing me, but on the palm side of one of my fingers it is SO tender around the joint and there is a little hard knot there. I Have felt some of those little hard knots other places on my muscles as well, very tender.. seem worse during a flare..

anyhow, can those grottons papules be on the palm side of your hands or are they always on the top? Anyone else have these little things? Ugh, so over this flare!!!

Hi bny806. My Gottron's Papules are near my fingernails in the joint areas at the top side of my hands. Mine are little, round, and red.

I do not know about the papules being on the palms. I think looking at DM pictures and reading some articles may give more information on all the places they could be located. Try not to mistake them for flat warts. Flat warts that are tiny can be located anywhere. I get flat warts too.

Thanks!! no, these aren't external at all- you can't see them at all, just feel them.. they are like little nodules under the skin - feels like maybe on the muscles? hard little balls.. ouch!
I remember seeing an image of an xray at one point of a patient's hand with DM and they had calcifications all over their hands and arms.. curious if thats what i'm feeling>?

I occasionally get one on my fingers. If it gets filled with fluid, I pop it. Doesn't hurt. Sometimes doesn't fill up. Goes away as painlessly as it comes. Usually I can ignore it.

Haven't had one since 2012.

Will do a little research on them.

I think you guessed it--they're calcium deposits. I have many of them. Have had many surgeries to remove them. Oftentimes they come back. They show up mostly where you put pressure frequently. If you go the the Scleroderma site, called Team Inspire, you'll find discussions about it. People with Scleroderma, especially those having the CREST type, are very prone to having calcinosis. Unfortunately medical science has no answers for it, other than surgery. I remove many of them myself, but one has to be careful to not get them infected.
