with the new reforms on health insurance doesn't your dad's insurance cover you as a dependent until age 26 either if you're a full time student or can show paperwork stating you cannot attend school full time due to an ailment?

i'm a claims adjuster for a health insurance company so i don't know all the exact details of enrollment since i haven't worked in that department in well over 6yrs. but i know that my company covers dependents until they're 26. i thought all companies had to due to the health reforms being made?

I have kind of that same question I hope someone can help us. Unfortunately, I have not been on my parents insurance. Currently on medicaid. I am also going through the disability process already had my first denial with plans to put in my appeal. However, I did/do want to try and work. But I don't want my insurance taken away. And it would be a trial I don't know if I can keep a job I can't even attend school every day. Iam also afraid I will be denied again because I am a full time student.

I know here in PA they now made it a law that they have to give you insurance even with a pre-exiting health condition..however it is very costly..I think they wanted about $280.00/month..as if that is possible when you aren't working (my case also).
I'm an independent pet groomer and have no health insurance either, so I had to apply for State Assistance healthcare which I was approved for. I would look at low income assistance options before applying for any of the faircare pre-existing insurance as it is too expensive.
I've also applied for SSI Disability, a few months ago but haven't heard anything yet. I can't even brush my teeth let alone groom dogs/cats.! Oh this disease is the worst..

I am not sure what is available to you. You might be able to stay on your parent's insurance if you are still a "dependant" and "disabled'. I would check. Insurance is one of themain reasons I fight to stay working....well and a paycheck too. It is scary how difficult it can be to get insurance with a pre-existing condition. You also might want to see if you can get Cobra from your parent's policy.

hopeful444 - That's the problem! I do have insurance until I turn 26 - but in January I turn 26! What do I do then?

lexisgirl - I've asked about Cobra - nope. I've applied for disability, but until that comes through I doubt any insurance company would keep me on as disabled without the social security backing me up.

I understand your frustration Beth. It isn't up to SS to decide you are disabled, it is up to your doctor. SS is for disability SS and Medicare. I would certainly check. My policy will cover a dependant indefinately if they are disabled. Not all will do that but it is worth checking. In the interim, I would absolutely make sure I had all tests and scans completed before January just in case. The medication isn't the most expensive but those tests and scans are a killer.

Another thought I just had is if you are a full time student, sometimes you can get student insurance. It wouldn't compare to your family policy but it would be better than nothing.

I have a similar problem to that...what happens when you healthcare is maxed out for the year and now can't receive any treatment (i.e. go to a doctor to get help)???

I am currently experiencing an intense flare up with my DM, rash all over and in constant pain with my muscles. So, I am basically going untreated at the current time (no meds or doctor visits)....I am currently thinking I should just go to the ER....

I would think probably best to go to the ER? I mean this condition really can't go untreated.

Steph625, it's a tragedy to be without medical insurance and I can surely understand what you are up against. Yes, definately go to the ER you have an emergency.

I found that Cobra is very, very expensive and if you have limited income it can be quite impossible to afford. Healthcare in the USA is in a critical position right now, especially if you have a pre-existing condition. Even in the States where you can get insured with pre-existing conditions the cost is prohibited.
