Polymyositis (PM) is a type of chronic inflammation of the muscles (inflammatory myopathy) related to dermatomyositis and inclusion body myositis. The inflammation is predominantly of the endomysium in polymyositis, whereas dermatomyositis is characterized by primarily perimysial inflammation.

Cracked mouth ( corners) help :) please

From the severe dryness, the corners of my mouth have cracked about 6 weeks ago, and they just get worse and are not healing. It is so painful, it opens when I try to open my mouth to eat, ect. Does anyone else have this happen? I am already on Evoxac to stimulate saliva glands, I use all the biotene products, keep cream on the corners of my mouth, but the severe cracks at each corner of my mouth stay there, and its so painful. I would love to hear about anyone else who has this, any advice to help them heal, ect. I am on plaquenil, cellcept ( 3000 mg) and prednisone 7.5 mg maint. dose. I have been on all of this for quite some time.

Hi Mary; I've cracks in the corners of my mouth for a number of years. They have not been anything like yours for me it comes and goes. When my doctor used to ask me if I had sores in my mouth I would mention it to him. He said nothing, so I thought it had nothing to do with myositis. Now I wonder. I wish I could suggest something for you because I know your in pain. Take care

I too have had these and I did all the topical things you mentioned, as well as, bought a humidifier for every room in my house, then I bought a hygrometer, which measures humidity, and got to work making my house a constant 27 - 30% humidity, it was lots of work. But, it was not hard work and it was something I could do with the disease in full "kick my butt mode". I also found it was a little better to use plain old black label Chap Stick. It just worked better for me. I also drank about two gallons of water a day, and had no carbonation or caffeine, as they actually rob the body of moisture. It took about three months of constant humidity to work.

Another thing I suggest is to ask your doctor for a topical pain reliever, sometimes I have had to do this for spots I have itched to much, and it really works.
