Polymyositis & Dermatomyositis Support Group
Polymyositis (PM) is a type of chronic inflammation of the muscles (inflammatory myopathy) related to dermatomyositis and inclusion body myositis. The inflammation is predominantly of the endomysium in polymyositis, whereas dermatomyositis is characterized by primarily perimysial inflammation.
I broke our television a few weeks ago when I fell and knocked it off the shelf. Since then I have been waching hulu on my daughter's laptop mostly at night. Tonight I was trying to find something interesting that didn't require me to pay which most of the good things do. I was on the hulu site but most things were charging for hulu plus. I came across an old movie on CBS titled Triumph of hte Heat starring Mario Van Pebbles and I am not a big fan of Mario, but after reading the preview decided to watch it. I try to stay away from sex, killings, cursing and the things that make some movies interesting. I have been without a man's touch for a long itme so I try to stay away from anything that will aruse those feelings even more than they have be arused lately..hah.
Anyway I was very surprised that it was a movie about Ricky Bell, who played football for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. I live in Tampa and had recently heard something about Ricky Bell, probbly being inducted into the hall of fame or something as a few other from the Bucs were inducted recently or are being inducted. Anyway I decided to goggle Ricky Bell and was even more shocked to find out htat He had Polymyositis and DM. I just couln't believe it, I love and fear the Lord and have spent most of today crying, writing and sleeping, probably in that order. I wrote my pain. That is what helps me get ove rme. I can't understand why I am going backwards even though my PM is supposed to be in remission. I love to write and it is a way of helping me to deal with what is going on. Anyway to read about Ricky Bell even though he died helps me. He died in 1984 at the age of 29, but htat was 30 years ago, in 1984 and I hope that there has been more done about this disease in the time. I plan to start some research tomorrow o find out what was done in that thimeframe. The movie was made in 1991 and if the doctors in San Diego knew about PM and DM in 1984, there should be more information from that time until now. In the movie which wasn't really about the disease, but more about a relationship which he developed with a handicapped boy, there should be something which can help PM and DM suffers. I will keep you advised. This is hte best thing that I have read in awhile. The movie talked about his muscle spasms, his swelling, which I suffer from now. It showed his skin rash and swelling. The swelling in my hands went down today I believe, but my legs are so huge that they look like two women standing together. Remember no more proofreading, so I hope that this is readable.

I have not seen the Ricky Bell Story which is called, "The Triumph of The Heart. The Ricky Bell Story." I did see a tv football special where several clips from the film were shown to highlight the career of Ricky Bell. The Ricky Bell movie looks terrific and family oriented. Ricky had an impressive career and was an exceptional person too.
I hope you will feel better. I do think writing can be good therapy. Enjoy your research on medications too. I agree with Autumn that more knowledge is available on DM/PM. The current meds can slow down disease processes too.
It will be interesting to read updates from you once you research what treatment was like 30 years ago. At one time, PM only had a 5-year life expectancy. But now our life expectancy has greatly improved. I'm so sorry that you are still struggling with your health issues. Even if I don't express it, please know that you're in my prayers.

I was first diagnosed with PM in 2008, but then with overlapping DM and Lupus in Jan. 2011. My muscle biopsy showed serious muscle damage but was inconclusive for PM or DM, so I guess that some of us might have a hybrid form of myositis. Maybe that was Ricky Bell's problem.
