Polymyositis (PM) is a type of chronic inflammation of the muscles (inflammatory myopathy) related to dermatomyositis and inclusion body myositis. The inflammation is predominantly of the endomysium in polymyositis, whereas dermatomyositis is characterized by primarily perimysial inflammation.

I haven't received my biopsy results yet. so this question might not mean anything. I'm experiencing some aches with my fingers and hands. Is this because of the prednisone. I just want to get my results. If they say I don't have any myostisis then I will think the worst as it being ... well I don't want to say. I had a skin biopsy that said DM so I if I have DM then I can move on.

Sorry to post when I'm still up in the air with what's going on.

I have much pain in my hands, wrists, and thumbs, but it is due to lupus rather than PM. Because autoimmune diseases often "run in packs," your pain could be anything, so don't jump to any conclusions. Wait for the doctor to get to the bottom of your problems. The skin biopsy is often conclusion enough for some doctors. Hopefully the prednisone won't skew the results of your muscle biopsy. There's no need to apologize for posting here, as most of us understand the loooong, and frustrating, diagnosis process. Best wishes to you.

Ked in your shoes and done the waiting. Its hard. Trevor, I too had pain in my hands fingers and joints. Still do a bit to this day. If you had a positive skin biopsy it will all work out. Hang in there, let us know when you do but these things can take a while. Autumm

Hi Trevor49 - I have had DM since early last year - my hands do hurt a bit most of the time, especially my wrists. I think it may also be a touch of arthritis - my hands are more swollen when the weather is hot. Colder weather is a lot better for me as the swelling goes down a bit. Like the rest of us, it is frustrating - I often have a moan and a rant but don't worry we all understand.

Hi Trevor, DM is scary at first. Aches and pains in hands and fingers is typical of DM. Try to relax. Your results will come in soon. We will be here for your journey with DM. Be sure to check out The Myositis Association at www.myositis.org

*sigh* I know thats how it started off for me. Soon I couldn't move my wrist or fingers in a full range motion with out feeling super stiff or achey. I have DM. The Prednisone worked for when I was on a high dose and I didn't feel it much at all. Now tapered down to 5mg and on Cellcept. They gave me Tramadol for the pain. See if that works if it progresses.
