I'm 15 and I've had pmdd for a little over a year now. Some months, I'm completely fine and just pms symptoms. However, other months it's HORRIBLE. Well, I'm having a really bad month. I've been crying for days at the drop of a hat and I'm so lonely and I keep feeling suicidal. I know I won't actually do it, but it really bothers me. My mood is horrible and my family doesn't understand it. Also, does anyone ever NEED a hug from a certain person every month because of it??? And if you don't get it, you cry and cry. Am I the only one that needs a hug from someone in particular??? Help :(
Hi Emma, I'm sorry to hear you're feeling this way, but I completely understand. I hurts me that you are 15, you shouldn't have to go through something this difficult when you're so young. It started for me too at that age, so I almost feel like I'm writing this to myself in a time machine chat : ) I'm 33 now.
I would like a hug too. I wish I could give you good advice, but I'm not even very good at helping myself yet. I've tried many things, and for me meditation seems to be most effective. It has taught me not to fight it and try to accept feeling terrible for a part of the month. It's not easy to accept, it might even be the hardest thing in the world, but I do know that fighting it makes it worse. Being mean to yourself really doesn't help, even though it's tempting. When you want to cry, just cry. When you're angry, be angry. Try not to fight it. Let the emotion be there. At one point the sadness wants to leave you and you should be ready to let it. You can let go of it by not hanging on to it.
Meditation has also taught me how everybody is worth the same. I can't tell you 'please don't be suicidal', even though I want to. I know that doesn't help. But I do know for a fact that you're just as important as everybody else on this planet. We need you here. You're loved, even though it sometimes doesn't feel like it. You're good the way you are. And now you might think, 'well there's a lot to improve about me', but really, there's not. You are perfect the way you are, imperfections are human. Feeling horrible is human. And fortunately no emotion lasts forever. You'll feel better soon.
If you'd like to start reading about meditation, Jon Kabatt Zin is a good author to start with. He also has an audiobooks. Also, Tara Brach has great podcasts about mindfullness/buddhism. I don't know if you're into that stuff, but it really helped me to be nicer to myself and a little more accepting of this horrible hormonal situation every month.
Hang in there. Big hug.
And don't forget to also give yourself a mental hug sometimes : )
Eve123, thank you so so so so sooo much. I've been taking vitamin B6. It's been helping a lot as long as I take it daily. Still though it is bothering at times, but I know overtime I will learn ways to deal with this.
