Do I really have PMDD or is it in my head?

Hello,


I am 22 and have been dealing with PMDD and anxiety for almost 10 years (got period at 10/11yrs) and I just started sertraline a week ago to combat the symptoms. For the past few months, I've felt like my mental health state has been on the decline. My episodes keep spreading further and further out into my cycle, to the point where I'm lucky to have one full good week.


I feel very confused with PMDD. I'm a logical person, but I can't grasp why I'm like this. Other than my internal turmoil, my background is quite perfect. My life is pretty much perfect. I was never abused or had traumatic episodes in my life. I  feel almost like I don't deserve to be sad. When I think of people with emotional problems, their story either starts with something bad that happened, causing them to be like this, or something incredible that happened (like being a genius), and that's why they are like this.


I just can't grasp the "why", and the feelings that "I don't deserve to be sad" manifest into other feelings like worthlessness. Its wreaking havoc on my life, and I just feel so... confused. Sometimes I fear that its just narcissism and I'm seeking attention, but if that's the case, why can't I stop these feelings?

i think you are being far too hard on yourself...and not attention seeking at all.

PMDD can be confusing for sure,but please have some compassion for yourself....it is a REAL struggle to have to live with PMDD....

I think traumatic events can emphasize the effects of PMDD, but I think it can be a stand alone disorder. You don’t have to have faced anything traumatic to have the hormonal imbalance of PMDD. (Well I believe it’s a hormonal imbalance). I’m sorry to hear you’re struggling with your mental state. I agree with the previous poster than you should allow yourself some compassion, because despite a ‘great’ life, you’re struggling with a mental disorder.
