Here to offer suppor and care for people who have lost their pet family member
I had to put my German Shepherd down in September. I knew it was going to happen and I was grateful for the time we did have since he was diagnosed in January 2017 with osteosarcoma (bone cancer). I was so bonded with him, and it’s hard because he was only 8. He kept me going after my husband left, my Dad died, and I had received treatment for cancer all in one year. I was evicted from the house my Dad had promised me when he passed but was not included in the will and I had to fight my ex for support. He took all the money and our vehicle. I was ready to give up but I owed my cats and dogs and knew they would probably be euthanized if anything happened to me. My Shepherd was my rock and my shadow. He looked after the cats, me and my other dog Sophie (Labrador). When I was in temporary housing I found out he had cancer. I was so devastated and with the assistance of my vet we made him comfortable with surgery (amputation) and medication. He lived for 9 months and with the exception of the last two weeks he was my lovable giant puppy. My ex was abusive and my Shepherd stopped him from assaulting me and when we found a permanent place to live I relied on him to keep me safe. I lost one of the cats Emma, to kidney disease in March. My Lab was put down in July, she was 16 and couldn’t walk anymore. Then when I realized I was close to the end of my time with the Shepherd I couldn’t bear it. I don’t know where I found the strength to do what was best for him, but I did. I feel like a part of me died and all the color in the world is gone. The cats have been extra loving but the void can never be filled. I haven’t had a full nights sleep, I don’t enjoy anything. He was the only one who truly had my back (or my six) in this life. Now it’s over. I know the cats will be ok, one of the vets at the clinic will re home them if anything happens. I just don’t see a future. It was me and my Sheppie against the world. I have no family, and the friends I do have are superficial at best. It’s pathetic that the only ones who will miss me are the cats. If you have a pet in your life please don’t take them for granted. They live for you and can be taken away so cherish every moment.
Thanks,
Maddy
