I also go to K-mart once a month to get my paper goods on sale! Sometimes I buy cold things when they are on sale there.
I think today you have to look for bargains. I use my computer to look for sales and then go. I have a BJ's card so I also get items there when on sale.
I don't go nuts shopping, but I shop out of necessity and not wants now. Everything is just getting to expensieve and I shop for myself and wonder how I willmake it. I don't know what a family spends today just for groceries but it is getting terrible!
The store is not as busy and I am able to get in and out of the store quickly. I don't have to worry about forgetting things or running out of things. I have more money to do my shopping and always cash in my pocket. I only buy what I need. I can plan my meals and my shopping as I go by only having to think about what we are going to eat for a few meals at a time. Nothing goes to waste or spoils before I can use it.
And shopping like this allows me to make several different meals and adds some variety because we don't have to eat the same thing over and over again if we don't want to. By buying less and walking to the store I also save money on transportation and I am getting some fresh air and exercise at the same time I am getting my shopping done. And my husband does the same thing and we take turns going to the store.
I use the envelope method for groceries / gas, so I try to reserve 20.00 for the second week for extra produce / milk, etc if we run out of something.
We buy Ball Park hotdogs on Memorial weekend week only. Meijers sells them for a $1 a pound every year on that weekend week. So we buy enough to get us through a year until the next years sale comes.
Right now Save A Lot has chicken leg quarters on sale for 59 cents a pound. I plan to buy 30 pounds and freeze them in meal size portions in the freezer. Years ago, chicken was almost all I ate in meat and I used to buy 140 pounds at a time and fill my freezer. My husband is not a bign chicken eater like my EX. was, so 30 pounds should get us through a year.
When frozen veggies come on sale, I buy a case of what is on sale and put it in the freezer. We have a local restaurant supply store that is open to the public, you don't need a membership. Everything is in large sizes for restaurants. I like shopping there for my veggies and other items. The bulk sizes are most of the time cheaper and the quality is better than grocery stores.Since it is heavily shopped by the public, they have added resealable bags to their packaging, so it is easy to just use a little and close it back up and keep it in the freezer. Some items, not many are a lot more expensive than the grocery stores so you have to know your prices and be careful.
On the weekends, they set up sample tables where you can sample a changing variety of their products. On Saturdays we plan our shopping at around noon. We go to get a free lunch. Often what they serve is plenty enough that it is all we eat between breakfast and supper.
