Wasnt he born early?? Smiling normally starts about 6-8 weeks for full term babies...but that is just an average. Lucas was 7 weeks premature and didnt start smiling until about 13 weeks. Id give him a little more time and then if you are still concerned ask your ped about it.

I forget how early he was...but you may need to adjust for his gestational age...thats what we do for Lucas. Just a thought

ALL babies have their own personalities too. Even if your baby wasn't early, perhaps he's just going to be a more thoughtful and pensive child in general. Maybe he'll leap ahead in the motor skills department but lag a bit in communication (like my son). If he's developmentally on track in most other areas, I wouldn't worry too much yet...and as always, check with your pediatrician at the next check up.

He is smiling at times, so you know he can...maybe he's just waitinbg for you and DH to channel your inner comedian! ;-) If it helps, we got the BEST laughs by making silly noises that surprised our son. One night, he thought the word KUNG FU was hysterical...the next night it was the word BAM said very suddenly like Emeril does. sometimes my son likes it when I pretend to "bite" his belly...and other days he thinks his daddy dancing around is funny. Your son might surprise you and laugh out loud at something you do or say...and then you'll be "that parent" who does ANYTHING for a giggle like we do!

Hey Kristen, I'm happy to hear from you on here. I have been thinking of you often and hoping you're coping as best you can.

As for smiles, my twins that were born at 34 weeks and they do and don't smile. Ethan has actual smiles, real smiles a few times but not all the time and Maddie has not had a real (non gas) smile. I think its cuz they are preemies and you know some of the things they do are delayed. Don't worry he will smile soon I am sure!!
