My 4 1/2 month old goes 10-12 hours without feeding at night... however she still wakes a few times each night and I don't know why or how to stop this. She goes to bed at about 7:30-8:00pm and wakes for the day at about 6:30-7:00am give or take. When she wakes in the middle of the night, we give her a paci and she goes back to sleep. It's not bad if it's only once, but sometimes it's 3 times.... We tried to get rid of the paci and let her cry it out, the doctor said to try for 7-10 days and see if it helps. We tried for 10 days and it got better, but then she went back to waking and crying... so we gave the paci back. Not sure why she is waking, I know she's not hungry bcuz she wakes very happy in the AM and not starving. This has been going on for about a month now. Any suggestions?

If you find out, let me know because we are going through the EXACT same thing with Sophia - she just turned 4 months old. Does your little one kick her legs around and make noise? That's what Sophia has been doing - she sounds like she's flopping around like a fish out of water. It's driving me crazy!

My son woke up every night like that as well. All he wanted was his paci too. It sucked to have to get up and keep giving it to him...but I actually didnt mind so much. We also kept him swaddled until 8 months old so he couldnt even put it back in his mouth. I had heard such horror stories of babies waking all night long to eat and change...etc etc that waking 3x to put a quick paci back in didnt really bother me. Once we stopped the swaddle he very quickly learned how to put it in his mouth by himself...now he(knock on wood) doesnt wake up at all. Now that he is 10.5 months old we keep like 3 pacis in his crib. That way if one falls out and he loses it there is a small chance he can quickly find another all by himself.

Jenn- yes, she will kick her legs... we have been putting a blanket over them and pushing it down really tight into the crib slats to hold her legs down- haha! She will start fussing, then crying... we go in, her eyes are closed and as soon as we put the paci in, she goes back to sleep! Who knows! Just wondering what is waking her....

I think at that age babies aren't very good at going back to sleep by themselves. We all wake during the night, but most of us just roll over and go back to sleep, not even remembering waking. Babies wake up and don't know what to do. At 4 months they can't get their paci in their mouth by themselves or can't find it, so they want you. Mine didn't even sleep through the night until 4 1/2 months, and she wasn't consistent until like 8 or 9. Now she falls asleep and stays asleep, but I watch her on the monitor and she does wake up. But then she rolls over or puts her thumb in her mouth and goes back to sleep.

My daughter did the same thing! I used to think thumb sucking was awful and not the way to go at all, so when she started getting that thumb in her mouth, I would immediately put the paci in instead. Now at almost 5 months, I haven't had to do a paci shove in a couple months because she gets her thumb and goes right back to sleep herself. It's been a lifesaver!! She also kicks a lot, but I think she is trying to get comfy again and she will calm back down after a few minutes. I think babies just toss and turn a lot in their sleep.

Yup, that's exactly what Sophia does...as soon as paci goes back in, she quiets down. Her eyes are closed, she appears to be sleeping, but she fusses til she gets her paci. Geez, I hope we get past this phase soon!

My Pediatrician recommended this book: "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" By, Mark Weissbluth MD It's an awesome book and he goes over issues like this. Hope this helps!

My girls do the same thing. I am thankful they are still in my room so I just roll over, lean over and bam paci back in the mouth.Jenn love the fish out of water statement! My girls are "active" sleepers. Keeps me awake too. Who ever coined the term "sleeps like a baby?"
