I found out last week that I have an ear and sinus infection, and because of this the doctor put me on some antibiotics and told me I am not allowed to breastfeed or it would hurt the baby. He told me to "pump and dump" and that about kills me. I am upset because of all this and it makes me think it is my own fault that this happened even though I know there is nothing I could have done to prevent this. I have already lost a lot of my supply and I am worried that when I am able to start breastfeeding again that I wont have enough milk for my baby. I am sorry to rant and rave but I just needed to vent to people who might understand what I am going through.

Ask your doctor if you can take fenugreek and blessed thistle or other things to increase your milk supply. BM is like drops of gold so I understand how upsetting it is to have to pump and dump.

There are antibiotics that are safe for bf. Can you call pharmacy and ask about the name then call your doc and ask if he could prescribe those?

I agree with kaja2008. I had an infection and was on anti-biotics. They do upset bubs tummy, but it shouldn't hurt them.

Absolutely ask for a BF friendly antibiotic. I had mastitis when DS was 2 weeks old and was on a cycle for 10 days and BF the entire time

I also agree you should check first to see if there's an antibiotic that is safe while BF. I had to be on antibiotics while BF and my doctor gave me one that was safe so I would still be able to safely BF. I've never been one to "pump and dump" either, I always felt like I was wasting valuable breastmilk so I know how you feel on that subject. Good luck, I hope your doc can give you something that's BF-friendly!

I had some breathing problems but refused to stop breastfeeding and my doc was about done with me, she told me if the meds she gave me didn't work, I would have to either pump and dump (i can't pump for some reason, so that's not an option), or quit breastfeeding. Well, it didn't work, but I got pregnant, so oh well. Tell them to give you whatever you can take if you were pregnant. There has to be something. They don't let pregnant women stay sick like that. Good luck!

When I just thought it was an ear infection my OB prescribed me a Z-pack (which I took when I was pregnant) and told me it would be ok for the baby. But when I got worse I went to a clinical doctor that I saw when I was visiting my grandparents in Louisiana. He is the one that gave me the other antibiotics and told me that I needed to pump and dump. When I told my OB about it this morning he told me to bring in the bottles Monday and he would see what he could do to fix me up. That made me feel a little better considering I don't like these meds anyway ... they make me really dizzy and light headed and a few times I had to get my mom to take care of my son because I couldn't. Maybe my OB will be able to figure something out. Thanks for all of the support I really appreciate it.
