OK so my almost 3 month old (where did that time go?) was born 6.5 weeks early. She is colicky and has known tummy troubles...however lately she has been showing a few more issues. She is almost up to 10lbs now and is eating 4oz of Gentlease formula at a time. She spits-ups often, but has always been a "happy spitter" it never seemed to bother her. Now her spit-up right after the bottle is no problem, but 2-3 hours after she eats she will spit up clear fluid and cry at the same time. I smelled the fluid and it has no sour odor..no odor at all really. She also appears to gag/choke when she does this. It freaks her out and she holds her breath for 10-15 seconds. I worry that she is aspirating this fluid...her chest has a definite rattle to it...of course it is never there when we are at the doctor. Is this acid reflux or is the fact that she's gagging on this fluid (not formula) cause for more concern?

I'm on my third acid reflux baby and that's what it sounds like to me. Although the symptoms can vary (and sometimes it's "silent" and there aren't any discernible ones at all) what you're describing sounds pretty classic. Does she cry a lot? Seem inconsolable? Does she grunt often in her sleep? Have you noticed any cluster feedings? Lack of these symptoms doesn't mean that she doesn't have reflux but if she's doing any of those then she probably does have it.

Reflux is very painful for them and is normally treated with a small dose of liquid Zantac. It has to be increased as they gain weight, which can be a pain, but it can be helpful.

My son is an acid reflux baby. He wasn't really a spit up baby, and for the most part he was pretty happy. But he would do things like arch his back, throw his arms out to the side, and if he laid flat he would scream. He would grunt and wiggle all night long, and he always had the hiccups. But then when he turned about 10 weeks old, the spit up started, and many times it was an hour after he ate. That is when we officially diagnosed it. My pediatrician added cereal to his formula, told us to keep him upright for 20 minutes after he eats, and now he is actually on zantac as well. It has all made a huge difference, and he is so much happier. Good Luck to you!

Sounds like acid relfux to me. My DS had the same symptoms as the other posters. It can be a pain to deal with, but it is treatable. Her pediatrician will probably start her on zantac and that usually makes a big difference.

(not always, though, as is the case with m DS. But my pediatrician calls him her "special" baby)
